Celebrating Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan on 1 Shawwal. The day begins with the Eid prayer, held in the morning after sunrise, usually in a large congregation or open ground. It is a sunnah to eat an odd number of dates before leaving for the prayer (Bukhari 953), to wear your best clothes and to take a different route home.
Zakat al-Fitr is due from every Muslim who can afford it and must reach those in need before the Eid prayer. Fasting is not allowed on the day of Eid. Many Muslims then fast six days of Shawwal, which can begin on Wednesday 10 March at the earliest.
Common greetings are Eid Mubarak and Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum, “may Allah accept from us and from you”.
When is Eid al-Fitr 2027?
Eid al-Fitr 1448 is expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027 or Wednesday 10 March 2027. The Umm al-Qura calendar gives 9 March; countries that wait for a clear sighting are likely to celebrate on 10 March.
Why might Eid be on 10 March?
On the evening of 8 March 2027 the new crescent will be only a few hours old and less than 2° above the horizon in Makkah, which is almost impossible to see. If it is not sighted, Ramadan completes 30 days and Eid is the following day.
When should Zakat al-Fitr be paid?
Zakat al-Fitr must be paid before the Eid prayer. Many people pay it in the last few days of Ramadan so that it reaches those in need in time for Eid.
When does the Eid takbir start?
The takbir begins at sunset on the last day of Ramadan, once Eid is announced, and continues until the Eid prayer.
