About Ramadan 2027

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, when Muslims fast from dawn until sunset. In 2027 it is Ramadan 1448 AH. The new moon is born on 6 February 2027 at 15:56 UTC, the same day as an annular solar eclipse. By sunset on 7 February the crescent will be about 23 hours old and 9° above the horizon in Makkah, which is why most countries are expected to start fasting on Monday 8 February.

Because the Islamic day begins at sunset, the first Taraweeh prayer is on the evening of Sunday 7 February, and the first Sehri is eaten before dawn the next morning. Each country’s moon sighting authority makes the final decision on the evening of 29 Sha’ban, so check your country’s page for local expectations.

Fasting in February means mild days for most of the world. The first fast in London lasts about 11h 16m and grows to 13h 00m by the end of the month as spring approaches. In the southern hemisphere it works the other way: Sydney starts at 15h 05m and ends at 14h 01m.

When does Ramadan 2027 start?

Ramadan 2027 (1448 AH) is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027, according to the Umm al-Qura calendar. The crescent should be visible across most of the world on the evening of 7 February, so the first Taraweeh prayer will be that night. Countries that wait for a local sighting, such as India and Bangladesh, may begin a day later on Tuesday 9 February 2027.

When is Eid al-Fitr 2027?

Eid al-Fitr 2027 is expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027 or Wednesday 10 March 2027. The Umm al-Qura calendar gives 9 March, but the crescent will be very hard to see on the evening of 8 March, so countries that rely on sighting are likely to complete 30 days and celebrate on 10 March.

How long are the fasts in Ramadan 2027?

Ramadan falls in February and March, close to the equinox, so fasts are short in the northern hemisphere. The first fast is about 11h 16m in London, 12h 29m in Karachi and 15h 05m in Sydney. Open a city timetable for daily Sehri and Iftar times.

Why does Ramadan start on a different date every year?

The Islamic calendar is lunar. Its year is about 354 or 355 days, roughly 11 days shorter than the solar year, so Ramadan moves earlier every year. Ramadan 2028 is expected to begin around Friday 28 January 2028.

When is Laylatul Qadr 2027?

Laylatul Qadr is sought in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan. If Ramadan begins on 8 February, the 27th night falls on the evening of Friday 5 March 2027. See all the odd nights.

How is the countdown calculated?

The countdown runs to midnight at the start of the expected first day of Ramadan in your own time zone. City timetables count down to the exact moment Sehri ends on the first day.
